In the nine years or so since all Macs have had USB ports, I've seen scores or hundreds of posts in these forums about sleep-related trouble caused by USB peripherals that simply didn't understand Mac sleep, and consequently prevented or interrupted it. So there may be several possible causes of your trouble besides the external USB ports. In those models and perhaps also in your older MBP, the keyboard, trackpad, BlueTooth module and iSight camera are all connected internally via USB. You apparently don't have a late-2008 or early 2009 unibody MacBook Pro. The random waking is really annoying and also likely to cause actual problems (battery degradation from repeated charge/discharge, overheating when it comes to in my bag) if it goes on too long. To recap, things I'd like to be able to do in order of preference: If there isn't, is there any way to just disable that USB port entirely? Ideally, I'd like to disable just the port on the side with the power plug (apparently USB1), but I'd be fine with disabling both of them and just re-enabling them when I need them (infrequently at best)

With that in mind, is there any way to stop the MacBook Pro from waking up on a USB signal? There doesn't seem to be a relevant option in any of the System Preferences menus, nor in pmset. My current theory is that there's some sort of short or other hardware problem causing the laptop to think something is plugged in to the USB port. Looking through the Console logs, I noticed "Wake reason = USB1" even though I haven't plugged a USB device into the laptop in days. It happens more frequently when it is plugged in to the power adapter, but it does happen when unplugged as well. I have a MacBook Pro that has recently started waking up from sleep at random intervals.
